UBER WATER TAXIS COMING TO LONDON
Will it be plain sailing for Uber Boats? The world’s best-known ride-hailing app has signed a 5 year deal with river bus service Thames Clippers to allow Londoners to catch a boat up and down the river Thames.
Londoners and visitors alike can now commute via the British capital’s waterways, thanks to Uber’s all new aquatic service, Uber Boats. Launched in association with Thames Clippers the service will be accessible via the Uber app.
Expected to launch this August, the new Uber service will initially be limited to 20 boats. It will cover journeys up and down the River Thames, from Putney to Woolwich, with bookings taken via the app and QR code. The company has clarified that it will be charging passengers the same price for booking a boat as it does for cabs. It also noted that it will be following all possible hygiene and social distancing norms in line with the pandemic.
Commenting on the new functionality, Uber’s regional GM for Northern and Eastern Europe, Jamie Heywood, said “many Londoners are looking for new ways to travel around the city, particularly when they start commuting back to work. Later this summer we will launch the Uber Boat by Thames Clippers in London as a means for people to arrange travel on the river and road, all through the Uber app.”
Thames Clipper’s co-founder and CEO Sean Collins added “the new partnership … will allow us to link the two travel modes of river and road, providing Londoners and visitors with even more options to commute, visit, explore and enjoy our city by river.”
Bon Voyage!!
